Families in the villages of Beit Sahour, Beit Lehem and Beit Jala have been carving articles for the pilgrims (now tourists) since they were taught the skills by the Franciscans when they came in the 16th Century to mark out the Holy Sites. Until 1949 these villages were exclusively Christian and the families from whom these products come are mainly Greek Orthodox.
One of the features of the artisan products from Palestine is the Olivewood, which is rich in grain texture and fragrance. The Olive tree has played an important part in Palestinian life and continues to provide a material source for artistry.
Images from the Palestinian artisan communities will be uploaded soon.
